Ever wish you’d been born ten years earlier? An unusual phenomenon perhaps but while I’ve got you, please allow me a moment’s elaboration. In my case, emerging a decade sooner would have seen my formative years immersed in the nation’s Beatlemania thrall instead of the fab four as a fading memory, my early teens coinciding with glam, my late teens punk and post punk instead of hair metal…..bah!

A decade into their career, at time of writing, Texan quartet White Denim are crossing the USA en-route to the UK and Ireland, promoting their latest album ‘Stiff’ a deliciously chaotic collection of tunes. James Petralli, Steve Terebecki, Jonathan Horne and Jeff Olson have the enviable knack of creating records containing the perfect blend of songs that either blow you away first take like the white knuckle blues of ‘Holda You, (I’m Psycho)’ or creep up and bite you on the ass such as the proggy, riff-laden ‘Mirrored in Reverse’.

Full disclosure; Maximo Park are one of my favourite bands. Since my first encounter with them in a sweaty north-east club, there are few memories that aren't intertwined with their ear for a melody and deceptively complex lyrics. They've soundtracked heartaches, adventures, falling in love; sometimes all at the same time. I once took off for an ill advised jaunt leaving a note reading only ''I'm going missing for a while (please feed the dog)'' (2005 was an odd year). So, it is with trepidation that I attempt an objective review of this, singer Paul Smith's second solo effort.

When I get asked about the Leeds beer scene and what the highlights are, focus inevitably goes initially to the Bars, Pubs and Bottle Shops that seem to be opening on a monthly basis, but also to the sheer number of Breweries that are producing great quality Beer across the county. Having
been a resident in the North for nearly two decades, it has been
painfully apparent for most of that time that a small number of bands
have cast a long shadow over any wannabe local musicians of an indie
persuasion, seeking to evolve the sound from where Messrs Brown, Marr
and Gallagher left off. Barring the odd exception, no like-minded UK
outfit has really been able to set the world alight since those heady
days a couple of decades or more ago.
Corbu: Artist feature and interview
For a musician,
Jonathan Graves is incredibly preoccupied with the visual. The
multifaceted, many-layered and hauntingly beautiful sounds he
conjures in the name of Corbu – the band of which he is the
undisputed leader – will, more often than not, start and end with
images.
Drawing inspiration
from his dreams, Graves writes from a picture inside his head, trying
to craft a song which transmits that image through the listener’s
ear and into their mind’s eye. It’s an ambitious approach, the
success of which is impossible to gauge, but it is easy to quantify
the sheer quality of the mesmerising music Graves uses as a vehicle,
which swoops through lush soundscapes in a movie-sampling,
brain-spinning, eye-opening Technicolor world sitting on the far side
of indie pop.
Little Lapin: Artist Feature and chat
During this cold snap it’s always handy to have either something to look forward to when the weather picks up, or some music to act as a comfort blanket, giving the listener a reminder of endless warm summer days (all the more rare if you’re talking about Yorkshire). Fortunately, the hauntingly fragile rootsy compositions put together by singer songwriter Lucy Cioffi, aka Little Lapin, are more than able to provide just the midwinter musical antidote we need.
Public Access TV - The Wardrobe, Leeds. Review & Interview
It’s a very damp Saturday evening in November with the sound of fireworks in the night air almost palpable. In order to stave off early signs of Seasonal Affected Disorder, tonight I’m at The Wardrobe to check out and chat with the Big Apple’s next great musical hope Public Access TV. The stateside quartet (recently bulked up from their original three piece with the recruitment of Max Peebles) are currently this side of the pond for a short tour playing a combination of gigs, mainly supporting a similarly hot UK prospect, Liverpool’s Circa Waves, plus a couple of headline shows for good measure in London then finishing across the channel in Paris.
