The brewing industry in the UK is booming and the nation has never been more in love with craft beer and real ale. Cities have seen an increasing number of craft beer bars and brew pubs opening up and nestling in with more established traditional boozers. York is a fine example of this and provides the thirsty beer seeker with a lavish choice of micro-breweries, tap rooms, traditional real ale pubs and modern vibrant craft beer bars. Using the luxurious and convenient York Marriott hotel as a base, we explored the historic city of York and its perimeters to find out more about the beer being brewed here and some of the places you can discover it in.

Getting away from it in North Yorkshire (TRAVEL & BEER REVIEW)

North Yorkshire – the largest county in this wonderful country of ours and one I have been lucky enough to have been raised in and visit its vast and varied delights on a regular basis. Not only is it home to the unspoiled natural beauty of 'The Yorkshire Dales', heading East we have the spectacular North Yorkshire Moors stretching across to the coast, covering over 500 square miles.

A triple tale from the darker side of beer

Even though the summer months are finally here, the weather seems to be dragging behind. Some people feel their Beer tastes change with the seasons, but for this article I'm slurping from the Darker ranger of the spectrum rather than light summer ales. From a more traditional Porter, to a Black IPA all three should offer something different...

Plus One Magazine Meets... Northern Monk Brewing Co

When I get asked about the Leeds beer scene and what the highlights are, focus inevitably goes initially to the Bars, Pubs and Bottle Shops that seem to be opening on a monthly basis, but also to the sheer number of Breweries that are producing great quality Beer across the county. In what we hope to be a series of articles, Plus One Magazine and I are going to speak to Breweries across the area to get an insight into how things are developing and what to expect from them in future.

Norland Beers (Halifax) & A Community Owned Pub (Hebden Bridge)

At the recent launch of Norland Beers new ale ‘Showcase’ in The Fox and Goose at Hebden Bridge, my taste buds were treated to a proper beer. This is a rich ruby coloured ale with lots of flavour and reminiscent of the ales of yesteryear. In a beer world packed full of ultra-hoppy IPAs and APAs it is refreshing to find a really drinkable ale that showcases British hops to give a deeply satisfying flavour.

Triptick (III). Three Studies Of Beers (Runaway Brewery Edition)

As my fellow beer writer Rowan rightly put it, the Mancunian beer scene is booming. Following on from this appreciation of beer from across the Pennines, and as part of our ongoing triptych series, I picked up Runaway Brewery's core range from Tall Boys beer market, and here's what I thought. 

'Triptick' (II). Three Studies Of Beers (Mad Hatter Brewing Co. Edition)

Mad Hatter Brewing have just turned Two, and only having had a few of their beers before, I took a trip to deepest Armley to pick up a selection from Raynville Superstore. An unassuming neighbourhood convenience shop from the outside, the owner's Son has been busy stocking the shelves with the best craft beer from the UK and beyond. Along with the three Mad Hatter picks I'm drinking tonight, I also restocked with more Thornbridge and Wild Beer bottles, at a very reasonable price.

Thornbridge and Buxton are two of the leading lights of the UK beer scene, both well established but ceaselessly innovative and consistently producing quality beer. My three selections tonight are bold, strong and new to me...

Northern Monk Brewing Co. Holbeck, Leeds

It's a striking image isn't it, the Northern Monk Brewing Co logo? One I was immediately drawn to when I first laid eyes on it earlier this year, and one that you will be seeing a lot more of from now on. The team behind Northern Monk Brewing Co have a spanking new home in the heart of Leeds from which they will not only brew their range of delicious beers, but have a refectory along with a bottle shop, tap room, events space and a kitchen. Located in Holbeck, this grade II listed building is the only publicly accessible mill in Leeds. As you enjoy their wares, sipping down one of their beautifully brewed beverages from twenty available taps, you can see partial elements of the brewing process through huge glass windows. Your beer literally being brewed before your very eyes! The refectory has been stripped right back to bare brickwork and stone floors giving it a real traditonal Northern feel.
