Evan Dando - (LIVE REVIEW) Brudenell Social Club, Leeds, October 21st 2024

Prior to this show, the not-entirely-positive reviews coming out of recent US tours had given me a sense of foreboding, which was not entirely justified. Strong support came from Ella Raphael; beautiful sunbeam tinged blues, reminiscent of Hope Sandoval at her hazy best; and Juanita Stein (formally of Howling Bells), with her nostalgia soaked, perfectly constructed Americana.

Accidental as it was, Evan hitting the stage to the beginnings of Mardy Bum playing in the background, and then insisting it be turned back up while he mimed along, was just what the apprehensive crowd needed. It immediately warmed up the sea of folded arms, and set the scene for what was an endearing, albeit ramshackle show. We were treated to stripped back versions of crowd pleasers like It’s A Shame About Ray and Outdoor Type, the crowd loosening up with every track they recognised. The real gems though were the covers (and yes, I know Outdoor Type is technically also a cover). Evan has always had a knack for retaining the essence of the originals, whilst bringing something unique. A Case of You was absolutely glorious, Beautiful even richer and more delicate than the Varshions version. Sometimes what is missed in the stories surrounding him, is that he really is a talented musician, and that despite the years of not taking care of himself, his vocals still have a depth and warmth that can take you into the heart of a song.

In between the music, Evan was surprisingly funny, occasionally rambling, and, in a couple of moments approaching incoherence. It’s hard to know how much is real and how much is now stagecraft. Anecdotes took odd turns, and there were times where it felt we were intruding on someone’s private world. In the past I’ve seen him barely speak to audiences, so to see him so interactive was both a joy, and concern as to what was fueling it. New single Fear of Living points to good things to come, I only hope Evan can stay well enough to see it through.
